Another week, another fire. Can’t say life in the Methow is boring. It would be nice to have a week without so much excitement and misfortune. How about next week we decree that no fires are allowed? I tried to contact Smokey Bear without luck for his stamp of approval. He is most likely on the fire line, too.
Speaking of fire, the barbecue has been scheduled for Wednesday (Aug. 13) at noon. Rosalie and Connie are cooking their hearts out. It is free to members. Next, bingo is on Aug. 21.
Senior of the month is Ken Grupe. I call him my lunch boyfriend because we eat lunch together each Friday. Ken is a great guy.
Last Friday, we decided to gather our precious items in car and truck and head out of town for a break. I feared the Rising Eagle Road Fire would jump the river and head our way. Jerry hit a sign, bent the bumper, and wanted to return home, fearing the sign was a bad omen, I guess. I talked him into going to Chelan.
Upon arrival, I searched the Internet for a dog-boarding place to take our two dogs and two cats. The lady said, “Sure bring them over.” When we pulled in looking like the Beverly Hillbillies, sans Granny in a rocker, she said she had made arrangements for us to have a place to stay and that our host would meet us and guide us to her home. Not something you are told every day.
Our host was a wonderful lady who lives in the most beautiful Tuscan style home I have ever seen, complete with views as far as the eye could see. She and her late husband had experienced fire destruction 20 years ago and offered their guest house to those in need. We were treated to fantastic hospitality and a calming night of sleep. She and the animal hotel owner both refused any compensation.
All this is to say that there are a lot of wonderful people in this world, unsung folks who help while asking nothing in return. If each of us reached out helping hands like the people above, what a wonderful world this would be. Be safe and offer help where it is needed.
