The PUD and Okanogan County Electric Cooperative are warning that incorrectly used generators can electrocute technicians working on power lines. Generators are safe if people use them to power appliances, but using a generator to power a house’s electrical system can send power back into the grid, putting workers and equipment at risk.
The PUD advises people to hire a licensed electrician so that a generator is properly wired and installed, and is the appropriate size for the power load.
People are also advised to contact the PUD so that workers can separate the generator from the distribution system where they are working. Without this separation, there is the risk of damage to the person’s home or business as well as to the power grid and PUD technicians.
Call the PUD at (509) 422-3310 for further information.
