The Methow Valley Killer Whales swim team made a stop at the Bearacuda pool in Brewster on July 1, on the road to the Okanogan County Championships that will be held near the end of the month.
The pods appear to be well on their way to a ninth consecutive county title. The Killer Whales “swam a great meet against Brewster, a team with fewer swimmers but a lot of skill,” said coach Jeanne White.
The Killer Whales were scheduled to compete at Omak on Tuesday (July 8) and host their annual Swimathon fundraiser starting at 9 a.m. on Wednesday (July 9).
Some of the individual heat winners at Brewster included Cassidy Butler and Mikey Hafsos, both 15, who won their respective 100-yard freestyle events.
Hannah Hafsos won the girls’ 50-yard backstroke in the 15 – 18 age group. Isaac Wall and Katie Labanauskas each won their respective 50-yard backstroke races among 13 – 14-year-olds.
The pods were strong in the 100-yard individual medleys and posted good results in most of the meet’s 80 events.
“We need to work a bit more on finishing the last five yards,” White said.
