Patrick (Pat) Allen Buckner

Patrick (Pat) Allen Buckner died May 18, 2014, at Swedish Hospital in Seattle. Pat was born in Walla Walla, Washington, on Sept. 28, 1965, to Allen and Phyllis (Pat) Buckner. His family moved to Winthrop in 1973.

Pat was dedicated to the community and volunteered in emergency services. He was a volunteer with the Twisp Fire Department from 1982 – 1995, and was a lieutenant chief engineer for Okanogan County Fire District 6 from 1986 – 1990. He was with the Twisp Police Department from 1990 – 1992 and Aero Methow Rescue Service from 1990 – 2006. He joined Aero Methow Rescue Service initially as a volunteer EMT and later as a volunteer agency dispatcher. He worked for Gary and Trudy Yockey as a security guard at their campground and RV resort on Pearrygin Lake and at Sun Mountain as a dishwasher.

Pat was an excellent dispatcher and kept track of the crews when they were out on calls. He never rested until everyone was safely home. Pat was passionate about the underdog, and he was always looking out for the unfortunate and helpless, especially animals. He was an ardent voice for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Pat was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. He is survived by his sister Sharon Beatty, three nieces, and very special friends Becky Taylor, Cindy Button, Stephanie Rowatt, Vikki Buzzard, Gabriel Maynard and Baby Kitty.

On Feb. 9, 2014, Pat wrote:

“The Stars”

“As I lie here in my world of one I look at the ceiling. I stare long and hard and I see the sky. The clouds form their billowy blanket as the snowflakes fall. No. No. It isn’t the snow I see. Stars. Many stars and they call to me….

“Come and play! Dance with us as we chase the wind to forever and beyond! We will touch the heaven! We will go on and on! And when you’re ready for eternal rest we shall lay you on a cloud. We the stars will watch over you. We’ll keep you safe and sound.”

Pat — I know you are safe and sound now and we all miss you.
