A battle of the undefeated between the 1A Chelan boys of the Caribou Trail League and the B league boys of Liberty Bell headlined the varsity tennis action at Chelan Thursday (April 24), where it came down to a marathon third boys’ doubles match to decide the winner.

Carlos Perez scored a 6-1, 6-2 win over Bond Malana in first boys’ singles. Jesse Schulz lost his second boys’ singles match to Bryce Robinson, 4-6, 3-6.

The LBHS boys’ doubles teams split their matches. Daniel Sonnichsen and Fletcher Rickabaugh lost to Tanner and Collin Hendricks, 2-6, 4-6, in first doubles. Corey Diamond and Josh Frey stopped a rally from Javier Navarro and Henry Elsner to win second boys’ doubles, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1.

“Josh used his height to good advantage at the net,” coach Dave Schulz said. “The two really played well together.”

“It all came down to third boys’ singles between Stoney Hulon and Matt Barnes,” coach Schulz said. “The match went on for over two hours.”

Barnes eventually won the third set tie-breaker, 11-9.

The girls’ first doubles team of Sidni Butler and Emily Alexander fought to a 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 win to give the Liberty Bell girls their only victory in a 4-1 loss to Chelan.

“That was another long, long match and they really hustled,” Schulz said.

Tulie Budiselich lost 2-6, 1-6, in first singles. Erin Frey fell 0-6, 2-6, in second singles and Carlee Wright dropped third singles, 0-6, 2-6. Logan Butler and Sylvie LeDuc came up short, 4-6, 2-6, in second doubles.

Entiat swept

The Mountain Lions swept visiting Entiat on April 23. The girls edged their opponents, 3-2, on the strength of two doubles wins plus one singles victory.

Alexander and Sidni Butler won first girls’ doubles, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6. Logan Butler and LeDuc won second girls’ doubles in a pro set, 9-7, after a deciding 7-4 tie breaker.

Budiselich lost to Alexis Swearingen, 3-6, 2-6. Erin Frey lost to Anna Spencer, 0-6, 3-6. Wright won third singles by forfeit.

The boys swept both singles and doubles on the way to a 5-0 win.

Perez won first singles, 6-1, 6-2. Schulz took second singles, 6-0, 6-1. Hulon swept third singles, 6-1, 6-0. Sonnichsen and Rickabaugh went to a sudden death 7-3 tie-breaker to finally decide their 6-3, 4-6, 7-6, victory in first doubles.

“This was a very good match because that may determine the number one seed for B league playoffs,” coach Schulz said.

Josh Frey and Diamond won second doubles, 6-0, 6-3.

The Mountain Lions were scheduled to travel to Wilson Creek for a league match on Tuesday (April 29). Liberty Bell will meet White Swan at Ephrata on Thursday (May 1) and will host Lake Roosevelt on Friday (May 2).
