John W. Umberger, 83, of Methow, passed away at home Dec. 26, 2013.
John was born in Issaquah, Wash., on Sept. 20, 1930, to Leon and Opal Umberger. At the age of 14 his family moved to Methow and in 1948 John graduated from Pateros High School.
John joined the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and
was honorably discharged in 1955. During this time he met and married Ruth M. Sample of Bridgeport on Aug. 16, 1953. She preceded him in death on Jan. 9, 2013.
John worked as a construction supervisor for Peter Kiewit and Sons from 1962 until 1973 when he moved back to the Methow, where he and Ruth owned and operated their apple and hay ranch. The couple were active in the local Farm Bureau and were winners of several Top Orchard Awards during their 30 years working the orchards.
He is survived by his son Wayne Umberger and daughter Valerie Umberger; along with three grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at a later date.
