At the first of two “Community Listening Sessions” at the Winthrop Fire Hall on Saturday (Nov. 2), Methow Valley School District Superintendent Tom Venable – center, with Hanz Sholz and Sam Lucy – solicited input from 19 attendees on how well the district is doing its job and what changes could be made to better educate its students. The participants – mostly parents with kids in the schools – shared concerns about helping all kids feel included, the importance of arts education, the desire to have a mentoring program for all students, and the need for more frequent teacher/student conferences to keep students on track. Venable plans to “share back” with the community at an event in late January. A second listening session will be held at TwispWorks at 6 p.m. on Thursday (Nov. 7).
