Students in Amanda Armbrust’s first-grade class at Methow Valley Elementary settled down after recess for a story (about first-day-of-school jitters). The school district welcomed about 40 new students and several new teachers at the start of the school year. Photo by Marcy Stamper

Meanwhile, five days earlier, students and their families were invited to an ice cream social at the elementary school, where they met other families, school district staff, and enjoyed the playground. Here, Clara George gives the jungle gym a workout. Photo by Marcy Stamper

school-summer-reading

On Wednesday, children – many too young for school – had an educational yet entertaining experience at the Winthrop Library as the Summer Reading program drew to an end. Here, 10-month-old Ezra Carter of Twisp listened to a story about the love life of moles before he and the others made their own versions of the furry creatures and indulged in cookies and juice.
