The Rev. Dr. Bertram Hugh Saunders, 88, of St. Augustine, Fla., died June 5, 2013, at Bailey Hospice Center in St. Augustine and began his citizenship in heaven. He was born Aug. 4, 1924, to Percy and Marion Saunders in Cleveland, Ohio.
He earned his bachelor’s degree at University of California Berkeley, a master’s of divinity at The Biblical Seminary in New York and a doctorate of ministry from Louisville Seminary.
Bert served as a pastor of Presbyterian churches in California, Pennsylvania, Ireland, Florida, Taiwan and pastored a congregation in Colombia, South America.
He taught English conversation for two years to college students in China.
He also served in the Army Air Corps.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Carol, of St. Augustine; his children, Steve Saunders of Twisp, Ann (Ken) Fisher of Dayton, Penn., Ruth Saunders of Pittsburgh, Penn.; sisters, Elaine Hansen of Modesto, Calif., and Eugenie (Walter) Halland of Orinda, Calif.; seven grandchildren, including Mary Saunders of Seattle, formerly of Winthrop, and Nick Saunders of Winthrop; four great-grandchildren; four nephews; and two nieces.
He loved visiting the Methow Valley, and treasured the friendships he made and the opportunity to participate in the baptism of his grandson, Nick, at Methow Valley United Methodist Church. He is most remembered for his love of people and his enthusiasm for life. His great faith in God gave him a gentle and loving spirit.
