The Liberty Bell High School varsity track and field team battled hot weather but still claimed the league championship for the third straight year at sub-district north competition in Oroville last Friday (May 10) – but in the process lost the services of junior Austin Watson, the B league’s No. 1 ranked 100-meter sprinter statewide, to an injury.

Earlier in the meet prior to his injury, Watson won the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 6.25 inches and anchored the second-place 4×100-meter relay team, also comprised of Cesar Dominguez, Jaymis Hanson and Liam Daily.

Watson, who is also ranked No. 2 in the state in the long jump, No. 4 in the 200-meter and anchored Liberty Bell’s No. 4-ranked 4×100 relay team, “pulled up lame in the 100-meter race with an injury to his hamstring,” said coach Rocky Kulsrud. “The injury is season-ending.”

Liberty Bell joined Bridgeport, Manson and Oroville for the four-school meet.

The Mountain Lions will send a number of athletes to district competition, among them Daily, who not only won both the 800- and 1,600-meter runs but also anchored the winning 4×400-meter relay team that eclipsed last week’s Liberty Bell record setting time of 3:37.61 by over a second, shaving it down to 3:36.48.

Joining Daily and the relay squad will be Cesar Dominguez, who ran away with the 400 meters, Ben Klemmeck, winner of the 3,200 meters, Jaymis Hanson, first in high jump and triple jump, Sarina Williams, No. 1 in javelin, Estrella Corrigan, 400-meter winner, and the top four finishers (see results, right) in each event.

“The weather was extremely hot, which affected the times for all athletes,” Kulsrud said.

The Mountain Lions will travel to Ephrata on Saturday (May 18) for the 2B district championships, where if weather predictions are correct the high temperature will remain in the low 70s under partly cloudy skies. Top qualifiers at the district meet will advance to the state championships in Cheney Friday and Saturday, May 24-25.
